Collective Truth & Reauthoring Our Lives

The Collective with Shavaun Scott
1

A chat with psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott. Tune into The Collective to learn about Shavaun Scott’s newest book Nightbird : A Memoir, and more.

We discuss sensitive topics in mental health, gaming addiction, mass shooters and their connection to domestic/ intimate partner violence, what happens before the ultimate violent acts such as shootings and "revenge suicide."

(I mention scenarios that happened in my youth. A man whose daughter died came to Fontana High School, in 1995, after a stalking incident in my life. The speaker came to talk to the girls about the warning signs of an abuser and a stalker, because his daughter and her friend were killed by her ex-boyfriend. I did not have time to go into details, but I do have permission to share these stories.)

“Ghosts don’t live in the ether but often inhabit our DNA. We’re all haunted by the spirits of our ancestors, but we carry more than one story about them and ourselves. There are stories of trauma, loss, healing, and overcoming; stories of endings, transformations, and new beginnings. Acknowledging the truth unflinchingly, understanding the resulting impact, and not perceiving ourselves as stuck in a permanent victim narrative eventually leads us to a better future. We are all in the process of reauthoring our lives.”
