Deconstructing Collective Fear

The Collective with Mark Hein

This episode was aired Sunday, 01/25/26 3-4 pm PST as we welcome author, artist, and Jungian psychotherapist, Mark Hein, as we deconstruct fear, chat about his work in The White Picket Fence: Stories of Individuality as Rebelliousness, and more. We discuss fear and how it is the root of many unhealthy behaviors.

MARK HEIN, the father of four adult children, has enjoyed careers as a college professor, a newspaper editor, and a Jungian psychotherapist. Besides several poems, plays, and stories, and a series of books on adult learning, he has published one novel — Father Dream (shortlisted for the 2022 Novel London Prize).
His second novel — House of Secrets, House of Lies — is due out this fall.
Now 81 and mostly retired, Mark writes and paints at his home
in Topanga Canyon.

After this episode I thought a lot about spiritual gaslighting, manipulation, and seduction. And how people don’t even realize that the current concepts around manifestation came from the idea of Manifest Destiny, which is a colonial construct to make the colonized and oppressed believe that they are living wrong and that their oppression, poverty, illness, starvation, and enslavement is their own fault. But in reality colonizers need the oppressed to believe that so they will obey and work harder for them. If they didn’t enslave and profit off of others that they deam less than, they would no longer be considered superior. They need us to feed their narcissism. They need to be more valuable.

This really make me think a great deal about the damage spirtual leaders are causing when so many people are suffering due to economy, unfair housing practices by landlords, homelessness, the disabled, abuse survivors, and more.

What are your thoughts on fear?
